How AI Resurrected 1978’s Don Francisco for Teletón 2024
A milestone in Chilean television blending high-precision deepfake, performance capture, and analog nostalgia to achieve an 84% household rating and 94% positive sentiment.

The opening of Teletón 2024 wasn't just a video; it was a generational bridge. At Feels, we took on the challenge of creating an encounter that defied temporal logic: placing today’s Mario Kreutzberger face-to-face with his 37-year-old self—the man who started the first solidarity crusade back in 1978.

Beyond CGI: The Human Factor
To avoid the "uncanny valley" and ensure a genuine emotional connection, we discarded traditional 3D animation. The key lay in Performance Capture. We collaborated with actor Beto Espinoza, who meticulously studied the host's gestures and energy from the 70s.
The Technical Process: Deepfake and Custom Training
The core of the project resided in a cutting-edge Generative AI workflow:
Model Training: We fed AI algorithms hours of historical footage from 1978 to map every facial feature and micro-expression of the young Don Francisco.
High-Precision Face-Swapping: We applied this model over Beto Espinoza’s performance, achieving a seamless integration of Mario’s features onto a real human base.
Voice Cloning: We didn't use a standard impersonator; instead, we trained an AI with period audio recordings to replicate the cadence and vocal brightness of Mario from 46 years ago.
Period Recreation and the "UMatic Effect"
The technology wasn't limited to the face. We digitally recreated the original 1978 Teletón Theater set in 3D, using lighting and textures that replicated the atmosphere of vintage tube television broadcasts.
However, the masterstroke was the analog post-production treatment. To complete the illusion, we processed the final video to simulate the UMatic format, the standard for 1970s television. This controlled image degradation—with its characteristic noise and colorimetry—was what ultimately "sold" the time-travel effect.
The Impact
The results spoke for themselves:
Massive Reach: An 84% household rating during the broadcast.
Sentiment: 94% positive feedback, becoming a global trend with over 22,000 mentions.
Legacy: We proved that when AI is used with respect for visual heritage, it becomes the most powerful storytelling tool of our era.
